Three high-impact educational and environmental projects to benefit half a million Hondurans

Projects in the Honduran environmental and educational sectors will receive 143.7 million lempiras

Today, the Spain Debt Conversion Program to Honduras, which is administered by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI), signed three contracts totaling 143.7 million lempiras for the execution of the following projects:

Strengthening of formal and non-formal education based on a culture of peace and environmental protection in the Community Association composed of municipalities located in Northern and Western Francisco Morazan (MANOFM).

With regard to the educational sector, six educational centers will be expanded, repaired and equipped in the municipalities of El Porvenir, San Ignacio, Guaimaca, Vallecillos, Valle de Angeles and Cantarranas; the municipalities are members of the MANOFM community association. 

In the Central District, four nurseries will be built and equipped in the communities of Villanueva, Santa Rosa, Nueva Cataluña and Nueva Jerusalén. The nurseries will benefit children who are not currently enrolled in the educational system.

The investment will provide a suitable physical infrastructure and equipment, as well as specialized human resources trained in integral child care and development. The nurseries will benefit approximately 2,300 children/adolescents and 160 children aged from 3 months to 4 years old (40 children per nursery). The nurseries will also contribute to improving the quality of life of single working mothers with limited economic resources.

With respect to the environmental sector, the Municipality of Catacamas, Olancho, will benefit from the construction of a new potable water system. The project involves the installation of a 140 l/s compact water treatment plant; the construction of a 500,000 gallon storage tank; the provision of 5.4 km of HFD pipe; and the installation of a water quality measuring laboratory. The investment will benefit approximately 47,000 inhabitants of Catacamas.

These actions will support the development policies of the Governments of Honduras and Spain and are in line with the Social Development axis of CABEI’s Strategy, specifically with the sub-component of "Contributing to Human Capital Development."

The event was attended by representatives of the Governments of Spain and Honduras and authorities from CABEI, MANOFM, the Municipality of Catacamas, the Municipality of the Central District and representatives from the projects’ construction companies.
