CABEI designs financial solutions to promote sustainable water management

Millions of Central Americans benefit from projects that CABEI promotes through its financial solutions

The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) is a leading organization in the design and support of financial solutions for the development of programs and projects that promote sustainable water resources.

On March 22 CABEI, which is a development organization that is constantly evolving, commemorated World Water Day by reiterating its support to its member countries to achieve the goals of universal potable water coverage, including its efficient extraction and distribution to avoid losses; appropriate water sanitation; adequate wastewater management; and active social participation in order to ensure the sustainability of services. During the 2010-2015 period, CABEI approved US$540.87 million to finance this type of project.

During the 2010-2015 period, CABEI approved approximately US$59.0 million to support integrated water resource management in areas with water potential in order to expand the productive capacity of the territories by promoting the establishment of irrigation districts and small and medium-scale irrigation systems that contribute to increasing the number of production cycles and to mitigating the water shortages that are commonly present throughout the Central American region.

In addition during the 2010-2014 period, CABEI allocated US$130 million to projects in the water and sanitation sector that have contributed to mitigating climate change. The objective of this type of project is to reduce the amount of Unaccounted for Water (UFW) and to improve operational energy efficiency. Through these projects, CABEI expects to install 347,360 water micrometers, 876 macro metering stations and 864.5 kilometers of potable water piping.

CABEI finances a variety of interventions to ensure the economic growth of its member countries, including hydroelectric programs and projects in the energy sector; irrigation systems for agricultural production in the rural development and environment sector; and potable water supply systems in the social infrastructure sector.
