04/12/2012

The project will be financed with 37.1 million Lempiras from the Honduras-Spain Program and 14.4 million Lempiras from the Municipality of Choluteca.

Today the project, "Improvement of the Water Supply Infrastructure and Solid Waste Treatment of the City of Choluteca," was inaugurated. The project was financed by Spain and the Honduran government in the framework of Spain’s Debt Conversion Program to Honduras, which is administered by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) and executed by the SETA-EDUINTER Consortium.

The project involves the construction of a water treatment plant with a capacity of 100 liters per second, which will allow the expansion of Choluteca’s water supply system and contribute to the improvement of solid waste management through the acquisition of equipment for the operation and maintenance of a new sanitary landfill.

The project includes the reforestation of 30 hectares in 4 of the city’s water producing areas, including the Quebrada Guanacaure watershed and an area around Santa Martha with many wells.

Successful project execution will benefit 160,000 inhabitants of the city of Choluteca, which will have an improved water supply infrastructure to allow greater potable water service coverage in the city. In addition, the donation of equipment for the operation and maintenance of the sanitary landfill will reduce costs for the Municipality and allow the use of funds for other activities that benefit the city's residents.

The project will be financed with 37.1 million Lempiras from the Honduras-Spain Program and 14.4 million Lempiras from the Municipality of Choluteca.

The project’s inauguration was held at the headquarters of Aguas de Choluteca in Choluteca and was attended by Mr. Luis Belzuz de los Ríos, the Spanish Ambassador to Honduras, Ms. Jackeline Molina, representative of the Honduran Ministry of Finance, Ms. Silvia Adriana Flores, CABEI’s Head of External Programs and Funds, Mr. Quintín Soriano, Mayor of Choluteca and Manuel Nogales, representative of the SETA-EDUINTER Consortium.
