Spain and Honduras conclude environmental project in the Community of Colosuca

The project involved an investment of 17.3 million lempiras from the Honduras-Spain Debt Conversion Program.

Today the project, "Improving the Environmental and Natural Resource Management of the Community of Colosuca," came to a close. The project was financed by the governments of Spain and Honduras Government in the framework of the Honduras-Spain Debt Conversion Program, which is administered by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) and executed by the Spanish Development Foundation, “Solidaridad Internacional”.

The initiative involved the development of a management plan and the development and implementation of an environmental development strategy to define management strategies for the use of natural resources.
 
The activities carried out as part of the project’s execution included reforestation and awareness raising about environmental protection and the establishment of pilot farms to manage natural resources in an eco-sustainable fashion. First community members participated in training sessions, and then they replicated what they had learned on their properties.

The project’s successful execution will benefit more than 88,000 inhabitants of the municipalities of Gracias, San Manuel Colohete, Belén, San Marcos de Caiquín and San Sebastián in the department of Lempira.

The total project investment was L.17,290,400.00 allocated from the Honduras-Spain Debt Conversion Program.

The project closing ceremony was held in Gracias, Lempira with the participation of Mr. Luis Belzuz de los Ríos, Spanish Ambassador to Honduras, Ms. Adriana Flores, Head of CABEI Programs and External Funds, Mr. Erick René Ponce Benitez, President of the Community of Colosuca and Ms. Yolanda Malpartida, the Central American Representative of Solidaridad Internacional.
