San Salvador, November 26, 2021.- This Friday, the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) and the Republic of El Salvador signed a US$214.7 million loan agreement for the Digital Divide Reduction Program in Schools for the acquisition of 592,021 laptop computers and 6,807 specialized accessories for people with disabilities, teachers and students.

This important operation, which benefits 597,493 students and teachers throughout the country by providing them with a computer to study, arose in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic that forced the suspension of on-site classes in schools and showed the need to strengthen digitalization to take advantage of the range of educational tools that are available.

CABEI's Executive President, Dr. Dante Mossi, stated, "Signing this loan is very important for education in El Salvador. We are very pleased to achieve this formalization in record time and we are certain that it will be of great benefit to children and young people, as well as to facilitate the academic activities of teachers."

This initiative is expected to improve the connectivity and internet access rates by 61 and 47 percentage points for students and teachers, respectively. Similarly, the intervention will lead to an increase of more than 20 percentage points in population connectivity and the penetration of internet services in El Salvador.
