Studies financed by the multilateral conclude to lay the groundwork for the bidding process for the purchase of electric buses for the benefit of more than 15,000 users.

Guatemala City, March 7th, 2022.– The incorporation of electric buses into the TRANSMETRO public transportation system of the municipality of Guatemala is advancing steadily in the process of implementing the new Line 5, which is already in the testing phase, thanks to the feasibility study of the pilot project financed by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) as part of the promotion of sustainable urban mobility in the region.

Within the scope of this initiative is the change from diesel to electric units, which generates a positive impact on the environment and the transfer of knowledge about this new technology and recharging systems to the authorities in charge.

CABEI Executive President, Dr. Dante Mossi, stated, "This project promoted by the Municipality of Guatemala will improve the quality of life of more than 15,000 users who, we are sure, will be motivated to use efficient, sustainable and safe public transportation. It also represents a great replication opportunity for other cities in the region."

According to the study, Line 5 would connect Parque Colón with the Civic Center in Zone 1 along the streets and avenues of Zone 5, with a length of 14 kilometers round trip and would require approximately 17 buses and a circuit of 1 hour and 24 minutes. The feasibility study was financed by CABEI through non-reimbursable technical cooperation in the amount of US$40,000.

This cooperation is framed within CABEI's 2020-2024 Institutional Strategy and contributes to the areas of Sustainable Competitiveness and Human Development and Social Inclusion, which seek to strengthen the economic, social, and institutional factors that determine regional competitiveness, as well as generate social capacities to improve people's well-being and quality of life.
