The results of these studies will be used as technical inputs for the partial sanitation of the Las Vacas River in the Chinautla municipality.

Guatemala City, February 8, 2022.- The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) approved a non-reimbursable technical cooperation grant of US$75,000 for the development of a prefeasibility study to evaluate the development of a sanitary landfill in the area of influence of the Las Vacas River in the Chinautla municipality of the Republic of Guatemala.

The initiative, which will have the technical support of The Ocean Clean Up Foundation, aims to analyze the technical, economic, social and environmental feasibility of a potential project that could be promoted by private sector actors and/or local governments in order to contribute to the reduction of pollution in the Motagua River.

"We are pleased to continue supporting this type of actions that contribute to the integral development of the country, which translates into an improvement in the quality of life of the population. We are certain that these studies will be of great help in advancing the actions needed to clean up this important river," said CABEI Executive President, Dr. Dante Mossi.

Collaborations such as these are of great bilateral importance for two founding countries, Guatemala and Honduras, reducing the amount of solid waste that reaches the Gulf of Honduras, affecting the tourist attractions of the surrounding beaches, and at the same time benefiting the communities near the Motagua River in Guatemala by providing sanitary infrastructure for the final disposal of waste.

The operation and support of the study is framed within CABEI's Constitutive Agreement, which establishes the attention of studies related to the conservation and protection of natural environmental resources, as well as mitigation and adaptation to climate change.
