Central Americans benefit from water and sewer works

The EUR25.7 million cooperation agreement signed between CABEI and Germany will contribute to the sustainable management of water resources, environmental protection and sanitation.

Tegucigalpa, May 19, 2017. –Today, the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) and the Government of Germany signed a cooperation agreement amounting to EUR25.7 million to support the "Central American Water and Sewer Program III" (PAAC III).”

The agreement constitutes a first step in the subscription of a loan with the German KfW Development Bank for an amount of up to EUR25.7 million.

The agreement is a result of efforts made by the Costa Rican Institute of Aqueducts and Sewerage (AyA) in the framework of Phase III of the Program denominated, "Water Supply for the Metropolitan Area of San José, Urban Aqueducts and Sewers," in order to execute projects in the cantons of Quepos-Manuel Antonio, Garabito, Limón Centro and Guácimo. The program involves developing an integral project to reduce and control unaccounted for water and optimize energy efficiency in the aqueduct systems operated by AyA.

CABEI Executive President Dr. Nick Rischbieth stated that, “The agreement reiterates CABEI's commitment to continue to seek improved results in benefit of the region’s inhabitants.” He also recognized and thanked Germany’s continued support to CABEI.

German Ambassador to Honduras, Mrs. Beatrix Kania, highlighted that, “Potable water and sewage systems are essential for the economic and environmental development of the Central American countries. Improving the water supply and sanitation sector is a priority for German cooperation in the region.”
