CABEI confirms its commitment to Central American regional security by financing that strengthens the countries’ security programs.

As a strategic partner for the region’s development, the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI)  shares the concerns of the region’s nations with regard to the issues of  security, drug trafficking and organized crime, among others,  and supports them in their search for solutions these problems. Therefore, in the context of a meeting of the Central American Security Commission, CABEI approved US$71 million in financing to El Salvador to finance the "Strengthening of the Salvadoran Penitentiary System Program" in the framework of the Central American Security Strategy.

The implementation of this program will expand the capacity of the country’s prison system, creating 13,380 new spaces and thereby reducing overcrowding. Currently Salvadoran penitentiary centers are operating at 218% overcapacity. This program mainly involves the construction of prisons and refurbishing of prison farms.

CABEI’s support to the "Strengthening of the Salvadoran Penitentiary System Program" is in the framework of the Rehabilitation, Reinsertion and Penitentiary Security Component of the Central American Security Strategy, which seeks to strengthen the security of people and goods in order to help the peoples of the region achieve sustainable human development.

The project contributes to the countries’ vision of developing in a framework of public safety, which is an indispensable condition for sustainable human and social development.

At a regional level in the framework of the Central American Security Strategy, CABEI is working together with Italy and SICA to prepare a Support Plan dealing with the fight against organized crime, money laundering and corruption. It is financed by the Fondo Único Italiano de Cooperación (FUIC) and currently managed by CABEI.

As the Central American Development Bank, CABEI’s 2010-2014 Institutional Strategy, "Competitiveness with Social Integration and Development" promotes initiatives that improve the quality of life of the region; supports programs and projects targeting human development and social infrastructure; and encourages the processes of modernization and institutional strengthening of the Central American countries.
