CABEI grants US$250,000.00 to Honduras to attend national dengue emergency
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has reported that in the region of the Americas, Honduras accounts for 66% of cases involving severe dengue.
Tegucigalpa, July 8, 2019.- In order to contribute to relieving the national dengue emergency, the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) granted the Government of Honduras non-reimbursable financial cooperation amounting to US$250,000.00.
As of June 2019, the Honduran Ministry of Health registers 10,390 cases of dengue, where 65.4% correspond to classic dengue without warning signs and 34.6% to severe dengue cases. As a result of this epidemic, the Government of Honduras declared a health emergency in 12 departments of the country, including Cortés, Atlántida, Colón, Comayagua, Copán, Francisco Morazán, Intibucá, La Paz, Lempira, Olancho, Santa Bárbara and Yoro.
By means of CABEI funds, timely attention will be given to the affected people, families and communities. In this regard, CABEI Country Manager, Manuel Torres, stated that faced with the government’s emergency declaration in the health system in 12 of the country's 18 departments and as a sign of solidarity, the Bank deemed appropriate to grant this non-reimbursable financial cooperation to attend the affected population.
The funds granted shall be used for any of the following purposes:
• Procurement of medicines and other elements necessary to attend the people affected by the disease and its complications.
• Purchase and application of fumigation supplies and equipment to eliminate the dengue-transmitting mosquito.
• Financing of campaigns and actions related to the elimination of mosquito breeding sites.
• Financing to guarantee the provision of communication services, epidemiological monitoring and vector risk and control.
• Others required for emergency attention and by the affected population; this must be duly justified.
Mr. Torres added that the funds provided by CABEI will be used to cover activities carried out by authorities in the Honduran territory. In addition, he highlighted that part of the resources have been budgeted under the "Emergency Aid Program," which is aimed at relieving populations most in need.
