The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) deeply regrets the death of the renowned human rights defender and award-winning environmentalist, Berta Caceres.

In accordance with the Universal Human Rights Declaration, CABEI acknowledges that everyone has the right to life, liberty and security. The insecurity and violence in Central America concerns the regional and international community, making it important that we all join efforts to overcome this effectively.

CABEI as a co-financer of the Agua Zarca Hydroelectric Project in the Republic of Honduras, affirms that this project, as all projects funded by the Bank, went through a thorough due diligence evaluation process of environmental and social risks, in accordance with international best practices.

We are confident that the facts surrounding the death of Mrs. Caceres will be investigated and cleared by the corresponding authorities.

In accordance with CABEI’s mission to promote economic integration and balanced economic and social development of the Central American region, every project financed by this institution must have high impact in development, providing special attention to environmental sustainability to improve the quality of life of its citizens.
