CABEI makes first disbursement to develop phase I of the Gorgas Memorial Institute for Health Studies in Panama
This initiative, which is being financed by the Bank for US$70 million, is expected to contribute to Panama's economic and social development through in scientific innovation.
Panama City, September 20, 2023.- For the benefit of more than 4.2 million Panamanians and with the aim of strengthening public health research capacity in Panama and the region, the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) made the first disbursement of US$11.3 million for the construction and partial equipping of the new campus of the Gorgas Memorial Institute for Health Studies (ICGES).
This marks the beginning of the construction of the new facility, which will have an area of more than 18,000 square meters, seven buildings with modern laboratory facilities in accordance with international biosafety standards, as well as spaces equipped for health research in response to the needs of Panamanians.
CABEI has earmarked US$70 million for this initiative, which will be used to develop Phase I of the exterior works and complementary facilities such as: a power plant, a pumping plant, a clean water and sanitation treatment plant, a cistern, earthworks, floors, pavements, wells, signage, landscaping, among others.
CABEI recognizes the importance of supporting medical research as a key factor in improving people's quality of life and the efficiency of health care systems in the region.
