General Secretariat of SICA, SIECA and CABEI launch 5th call for academic papers

• The Call for Papers invites professionals, academics, civil servants and researchers from across the region to generate knowledge and innovative ideas to promote the integration and development of SICA member countries.

San Salvador, June 21st, 2023.- The 5th edition of the Call For Papers 2023 regional invitation for academic articles on Central American integration was made official today at the Casa de Centroamérica, headquarters of the Central American Integration System (SICA) in El Salvador, under the slogan "Moving towards sustainable, resilient, innovative and inclusive development."

The initiative opened the invitation to professionals, academics, officials and civil servants, and researchers from all over the region, who have from June 21st to September 30th, 2023 to send their proposed articles.

The Call For Papers is promoted by SICA through its General Secretariat of the Central American Integration System (SG-SICA); the Secretariat for Central American Economic Integration (SIECA) through the Center for Economic Integration Studies (CEIE); and the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) through the Regional Center for Innovation and Technology (CRIT) and the Independent Evaluation Office (ODEI).

It also has the participation of Strategic Partners who, through their academic and research trajectory, give impetus to the initiative: the Central American Institute of Public Administration (ICAP), the Central American University Superior Council (CSUCA), the ETEA Foundation, the Institute of Development of the Loyola Andalucía University and the Institute of International Studies of the University of Chile.

The coordinating institutions stated that they seek to generate a space for the dissemination of knowledge, promote academic collaboration and specialized research on Central American Integration, with the purpose of putting into perspective the opportunities that SICA represents in the face of current global challenges with a direct impact on the region.

In this sense, we seek the development of proactive articles with high applicability to the current context, which contribute new perspectives, approaches, effective strategies and valuable knowledge to strengthen the regional work of the System.

The participants can develop articles in the thematic areas focused on the five pillars of regional integration: Institutional Strengthening, Democratic Security, Economic Integration, Social Integration, Climate Change and Comprehensive Risk Management.

Awards for the three best research articles:

•          First Place: US$3,000 plus a 50% scholarship for a Master's degree at the Institute of International Studies of the University of Chile.

•          Second Place: USD 2,000, plus a 100% scholarship for a diploma course offered by the Institute of International Studies of the University of Chile.

•          Third place: US$1,000 plus a 100% scholarship for a Short Course given by the Institute of International Studies of the University of Chile.

The launching event was attended by the SICA Secretary General, Werner Isaac Vargas Torres; the SIECA Secretary General, Francisco A. Lima Mena; the Ambassador of Belize in El Salvador and representative of the Pro Tempore Presidency of SICA, Cherie Nisbet; CABEI Director for El Salvador, Luis Rodríguez; and the head of CABEI's Chief Economist's Office, Armando Navarrete; as well as the Diplomatic Corps, Representatives of International Organizations and Development Partners, national officials of the SICA Member States, the regional institutions of the System, civil society representatives, among other special guests.
