03/07/2020

As regional integration entities, the General Secretariat of the Central American Integration System (SICA), the Central American Economic Integration Secretariat (SIECA) and the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI), promote a space for the construction of knowledge and specialized research through the 2020 edition of the Call for Papers contest.

Central America, July 03, 2020. In order to generate a high-level space for building knowledge and specialized research on integration, today the “Call for Papers: Central American Integration towards the Bicentennial of Independence and 30 years of the Central American Integration System (SICA),” was launched.

In this edition, the initiative seeks to put into perspective issues related to the economic situation of the region, cultural identity, public health, resilience to climate change, migration and the integration process, among others, which can be consulted in the bases of the contest. Likewise, the works must also include a propositional component that contributes new ideas to strengthen the Central American Integration System.

This Call for Papers edition also has the support of the European Union, the ETEA Foundation, which is the Development Institute of Universidad Loyola Andalucía with special interest in academic research regarding the Association Agreement between Central America and the European Union, and Universidad de Costa Rica, which is interested in research related to the integration process. The three strategic partners join this process in order to enrich it with their technical knowledge and fields of specialization.

During his participation CABEI Executive President, Dr. Dante Mossi, noted that together with the SICA secretaries, the regional agenda has been updated with such issues as trade facilitation, electric mobility, logistics and multimodal transportation in order to boost the Central American economy. He also took stock of the work carried out, stating that, “We are already promoting regional rail connectivity and to that end, financial support has been provided to the governments of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras to carry out the corresponding studies and projects. Likewise, one week ago we were hosting a webinar to analyze the implications that a Central American Railroad  would have as a pole of social and economic development in the new post-COVID-19 reality.”

For his part, SICASecretary General, Vinicio Cerezo stated that, "The Call For Papers contest is an essential part of the efforts that we have been promoting from the SICA General Secretariat  together with SIECA and CABEI in order to open greater spaces for the participation of people, who know about and can further deepen on the multiple benefits of integration. This new edition focuses on the integration process outlooks for the year 2021 taking into account the Bicentennial of Independence and the 30th anniversary of SICA; both dates constitute an important milestone in the history of the region and without a doubt deserve adequate reflection.”

Likewise, SIECA Secretary General, Melvin Redondo, highlighted that the Call for Papers is a unique space in Central America that provides effective opportunities for students, academics and professionals from the region and throughout the world to think strategically about Central American integration and also make important theoretical and applied contributions on the matter. He commented that,  “SIECA recognizes that this new call will contribute to the management of innovative ideas in the face of the region's development challenges. We are sure that these new academic contributions will have better elements for understanding the future that lies ahead for the region."
