Launching of the National Road Infrastructure Connectivity and Transformation Plan (PLANACOVIAL) in the Dominican Republic

The meeting was held at the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) together with representatives of the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI).

Santo Domingo, March 5, 2024.–  The launch of the National Road Infrastructure Connectivity and Transformation Plan (PLANACOVIAL), an initiative aimed at improving road circulation and transforming infrastructure in the Dominican Republic, was officially announced today. The operation is supported by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) through an investment of US$421.0 million and will be executed by the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC). 

The event was attended by CABEI Executive President Gisela Sánchez, Minister of Public Works Deligne Ascención, CABEI Director for the Dominican Republic Hostos Rizik and CABEI Country Officer for the Dominican Republic Manuel Ogando. During the meeting, they emphasized that PLANACOVIAL will benefit approximately 659,830 Dominicans residing in the provinces of Santo Domingo, San Pedro de Macorís and El Seibo, seeking to improve road circulation, reduce travel time between provinces, reduce the number of accidents and promote tourism in the municipality of Miches.

Among the details of the project are the rehabilitation and improvement of the level of service of 19.0 km of the Duarte Highway, as well as the construction of 15.3 km of marginal road to reduce traffic congestion on this road. Also contemplated is the construction of 67.9 km of highway from San Pedro de Macorís to the municipality of Miches, with two lanes of traffic.

CABEI Director for the Dominican Republic, Hostos Rizik, noted: "This project is a significant step towards the development of the Dominican Republic. We continue to support the economic, social and environmental development of the country with impact projects that contribute to the quality of life of Dominicans with improved connectivity and road infrastructure.´´
