The technical cooperation will finance specific research in a number of areas in order to prepare feasibility studies for a new water supply system for the mid-river basin of the Tempisque River and coastal communities.

Tegucigalpa, February 22, 2017. - The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) provided technical cooperation amounting to US$175,000.00 (one hundred and seventy-five thousand dollars) to the Costa Rican National Groundwater, Irrigation and Drainage Service (SENARA) to support the preparation of feasibility studies for the project denominated, " Water Supply System for the Mid-river Basin of the Tempisque River and Coastal Communities," which is also known as PAACUME.

Due to its climatic diversity, the Chorotega region is one of the areas in the country with the highest agricultural production, clean energy generation (hydroelectric, geothermal and wind) and tourism, including ecotourism. However, because it is located in the Central American dry corridor, it is greatly affected by drought.

The technical cooperation seeks to carry out studies in different areas that will enable the analysis of information and generation of proposals in line with the Costa Rican reality and in compliance with its laws in order to conduct a feasibility study and subsequently finance and build the project; this would solve the water supply problems for an important sector of the Chorotega region, in addition to promoting its development and economic and environmental sustainability.

This CABEI support is the first phase for developing an economic and environmental sustainable initiative that will have direct effects on producers by providing them with security to produce, diversify, grow and improve their and their families’ lives, as well as facilitating them with better opportunities for employment and streamlining the economy with activities, such as tourism and improvements in collective consumer goods.

CABEI is a strategic ally in the provision of financial solutions that contribute to raising the wellbeing and quality of life of inhabitants in the Central American region.
