CABEI grants non-reimbursable cooperation for Guatemala’s social development

14/06/2012

The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) will disburse one million dollars to support Guatemalan institutional modernization and strengthening, as well as to contribute to developing the country’s human capital.

A US$1,000,000.00 CABEI donation will finance the "Support for the Presidency of the Republic Program," which aims to strengthen and equip the country with the necessary technical tools to achieve the goals of the 2012-2016 Government Plan entitled "National Agenda for Change."

During the agreement signing ceremony formalizing the cooperation, CABEI Executive President Dr. Nick Rischbieth noted that the support is in the framework of the Bank’s Institutional Strategy, specifically the axes of competitiveness and social development.

Beneficiaries of this CABEI donation include 10 thousand expecting mothers who will be trained in a "1000 Day Window Program," as well as 940 people, including promoters, delegates and coordinators of the Ministry of Social Development (MIDES1) who will be trained in institutional modernization. They, in turn, will instruct 80 mayors, Municipal Development Councils (COMUDES2) and Community Development Councils (COCODES3).

The donation will also provide resources to promote agriculture in 10 municipalities selected as the highest priority regarding food security, benefiting thousands of families with bean, corn, potato and beet seeds, as well as planting equipment, thereby increasing agricultural production.

Support
CABEI Executive President Dr. Rischbieth explained that this aid will bolster Guatemala’s national agenda, which includes five axes: Security and Justice, covering issues such as protection of life and property; Competitive Economic Development, which covers areas such as employment; Productive and Social Infrastructure for Development; and Social Inclusion, with programs, such as the Zero Hunger Pact.

One of the priority targets of the cooperation is to contribute to the modernization and strengthening of human capital development, with technical assistance in the following areas: peace agreements; anti-hunger programs; and guidelines prepared by the Presidency for strengthening social development and sustainable rural development.

Likewise, this CABEI cooperation will support presidential programs that aim to foster human development, contributing to the training of 80 specialists in security and justice to streamline investigation processes, thereby strengthening the Ministry of the Interior and improving its operations.
