San Pedro Sula, September 19th 2013.- The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) was awarded the Socially Responsible Company certification from the Honduran Foundation for Corporate Social Responsibility (FUNDAHRSE in Spanish) for the second consecutive year.

CABEI's Executive Vice President, Mr. Alejandro Rodríguez Zamora, received the recognition that certifies CABEI's efforts to include social responsibility as part of its business strategy.

Mr. Rodriguez Zamora, CABEI's Executive Vice President, explained the development bank is committed with the economic and social development of the Central American region.

Since 2009, CABEI is implementing its Institutional Responsibility Plan (IRP). Through this plan the institution is carrying out socially responsible programs and policies which are implemented throughout the organization, and are oriented to the sustainable and responsible development of the region.

CABEI focuses its Institutional Responsibility Plan in three areas: education, health and housing, oriented on improving the quality of life of the Central American people.

EDUCATION: CABEI focuses part of its resources to improve the quality of public education, complementing the efforts of governments and organizations. CABEI donates furniture and equipment to schools in the region (school seats, computers, etc). It has benefited approximately 7,000 students.

HEALTH: CABEI contributes to the health and quality of life of the Central American people through donations to recognized foundations in the region. These foundations help patients suffering oncological, chronic renal and cardiovascular diseases.

HOUSING: CABEI finances (through donations) the construction of emergency houses, improving the conditions of vulnerability and overcrowding in which many families live in.  It has united efforts with TECHO Foundation in each one of the Central American countries, building 67 emergency houses, benefiting 310 low-income people, and families where women are usually head of the family.

Corporate Volunteerism is part of each one of these programs, taking a central place in the relationship between CABEI and the community. Moreover, efforts are oriented to involve families and friends of CABEI's collaborators, generating more awareness about issues in their countries and a stronger bond among them, the community and the institution.

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY: The protection of the environment is integrated in all of CABEI's institutional processes, and it is a key element on approving loan operations and providing technical assistance, and it is also part of its practices and internal procedures as a way to promote environmental and social sustainability of the Central American region.

SUPPORT TO MSME: CABEI reinforces its social role through products and services focused on initiatives directed to low-income people and less prioritized productive sectors.

CABEI is the leading multilateral supporting the microfinance sector and MSME in the Central American region (US$ 2,010 million on disbursements), and has the largest strategic partner network to channel those resources: more than 110 intermediary institutions (banks, microfinance institutions and savings and credit cooperatives).
