With the ultimate goal of safeguarding vulnerable areas, their population and natural resources, the Bank decided to provide support resources to quell the fires that are currently affecting different regions of the country.

City of Guatemala, April 15, 2024.- The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) approved an emergency aid of US$78,848 to the Republic of Guatemala to control the spread of active forest fires affecting different parts of the national territory, which have resulted in losses of biodiversity and the livelihoods of the surrounding population.

The National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED) has reported the occurrence of multiple forest fires, which have increased since February 2024 despite the efforts made by the various relief agencies and CONRED, which has coordinated the work to combat them.

In view of this situation and the recent declaration of an orange alert, CABEI expressed its solidarity by providing these resources as a donation to deploy aerial firefighting actions, since the fires have spread due to the strong winds and topographic conditions where they are developing.

CABEI reiterates its commitment to support Guatemala, a founding member country of the Bank, and accompanies the actions taken by government authorities to respond to these emergencies and mitigate the damage caused to communities, natural resources, and productive sectors.
