CABEI donates US$500 thousand to support population affected by fire in Guanaja, Islas de la Bahía, Honduras

Nearly 4,000 people are without access to basic services, food, clothing, and housing.

Tegucigalpa, October 11, 2021.- In solidarity and support for the Republic of Honduras in the wake of the devastating fire that occurred early Saturday morning, October 2, in the municipality of Guanaja, Department of Islas de la Bahía, the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) approved emergency assistance in the amount of US$500,000.

The non-reimbursable cooperation will support governmental and departmental authorities in the actions necessary to assist the population affected by the fire, which is estimated at 4,000 people.

CABEI Executive President, Dr. Dante Mossi said, "In these difficult times for the people of Guanaja, CABEI offers this cooperation to lend a hand to the thousands of families affected so that they can attend to their basic needs and try to recover from this emergency".

The donation will be executed by the Municipality of Guanaja through the Ministry of Governance, Justice and Decentralization, which will coordinate actions for the purchase of food, drinking water and primary goods, medicines, utensils for shelters, supplies for infrastructure repair, among others required to respond to the emergency. CABEI's representative office in Honduras will be in charge of following up on the cooperation.

The initiative comes from CABEI's Emergency Aid Fund to assist the population affected by natural disasters. So far in 2021, the Bank has approved US$6.0 million to support countries in dealing with emergency situations.
