With CABEI Funds: Universidad de San Carlos inaugurates sports complex in benefit of 175,858 students

The gymnasium and multisport court will permit the practice of basketball, handball and volleyball, among other disciplines.

Guatemala City, March 24, 2015. - Authorities at the Universidad de San Carlos recently inaugurated a US$2,229,833.38 gymnasium and multisport court on the educational institution’s central campus.

The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) provided US$1,125,000.00 for execution of the project known as the “Program of Investment in Infrastructure, Machinery and Equipment for the Universidad de San Carlos of Guatemala, Stage II.”

The initiative involves the construction, renovation and equipment of the different academic units both at the central campus in Guatemala City and the different Departmental Centers.     

It is noteworthy that the Universidad de San Carlos of Guatemala is the only national university in the country. It has a physical presence in 20 of the country’s 22 departments and currently attends a total of 175,858 students, 36.37% of whom study at the Regional and Departmental Centers.

This intervention falls in the framework of the CABEI 2015-2019 Institutional Strategy “Integrating Sustainable Development and Competitiveness,” in support of the focus area of Human Development and Social Infrastructure.

During the inauguration act, CABEI Director for Guatemala, Mr. Oscar Pineda Robles, explained that the strategic alliance is part of CABEI’s efforts to promote high-impact initiatives in the country and especially to strengthen higher education in the country.
