CABEI to finance study for freight train in Honduras
In order to support the execution of high-impact projects in the region, the Bank will provide financial support for the development of a feasibility study.
Tegucigalpa, March 13, 2020.- The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) will contribute with the financing of a feasibility study to implement a freight train project in Honduras.
The initiative is expected to operate in two stretches: a) From Puerto Castilla in the department of Trujillo to Isla de Amapala in the department of Valle and b) from Puerto Cortés in the department of Cortés to Isla de Amapala in the department of Valle.
CABEI Executive President, Dr. Dante Mossi, stated that, "The study will provide the technical, legal, financial and economic guidelines necessary for the project's construction, which will strengthen the integration of regional trade, while increasing the region's competitiveness.
Project initiatives related to railway infrastructure have also been carried out in other countries of the region. The Bank approved financing to Costa Rica for US$550 million to support the construction of its "Fast Passenger Train project in the Greater Metropolitan Area" through a Public Private Partnership (PPP). Likewise, it is also working on feasibility studies for the Freight Train in the Puerto Limón area and on similar studies for railway initiatives in El Salvador and Guatemala.
Among the financing modalities for studies and designs, CABEI has reimbursable, non-reimbursable or contingent recovery financial cooperation, which shall be authorized by the Board of Directors in accordance with the policies and regulations in force at the Bank.
