Through its Green MSME Initiative, CABEI supports solid waste energy production to reduce pollution in in Honduras.

The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) signed a technical cooperation agreement with Bioenergía R4E Choloma S.A de C.V. to partially finance a feasibility study for the project "Energy Generation Plant using manure from Porqueriza Porkies."

The agreement was signed on behalf of CABEI by Honduran Regional Manager Mr. Enrique Chinchilla and Mr. Hermann Reichle, President of Bioenergía R4E Choloma S.A. de C.V.

CABEI expects the operation to generate clean energy by using the organic waste from four swine farms located in the Municipality of Choloma, Cortés as an energy source. In addition, the project will help reduce greenhouse gases and pollution in the municipality. The Bank’s cooperation amounts to US$50,000.00.

This technical cooperation is granted under the framework of the Green MSME Initiative, a joint effort of CABEI, the German KfW Development Bank and the European Union in the framework of its Latin American Investment Facility (LAIF). Its objective is to promote environmental investments in energy efficiency and renewable energy projects carried out by MSMEs and small project developers in the Central American countries.

The Green MSME Initiative has US$44.5 million to finance small-scale renewable energy and energy efficiency projects. The funds will be channeled through CABEI’s extensive network of intermediary financial institutions (IFIs).

CABEI has another US$4.5 million technical cooperation program to provide technical assistance to financial institutions, energy diagnostics for MSMEs and studies for renewable energy projects, in addition to raising awareness about these issues.
