CABEI and SIECA launch academic contest; promote research on economic integration

CABEI continues to work on the development of initiatives that promote productivity, as part of the competitiveness that the region must achieve, and its participation in international markets.

Guatemala City, Guatemala. January 26, 2018. - The Center for Studies for Economic Integration (CEIE) of the Secretary of Economic Integration of Central America (SIECA) and the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) launched the regional academic contest: "Central American Economic Integration in a globalized world", a call for study proposals on issues related to Central American economic integration that seeks to enhance regional talent. 

This initiative seeks to generate a space for dissemination of knowledge and specialized research on economic integration in Central America, with the purpose of putting into perspective those issues related to the process of economic integration and regional policies conducive to the development of the region.

Professionals, researchers, academics and students are invited to participate in the call to analyze historical, political, economic, commercial and institutional aspects of the economic integration process, and offer novel analyzes about their opportunities and challenges. Special emphasis will be placed on those aspects that link the regional integration process to the current global context. The deadline to send the publications is March 23, 2018. The Secretary General of SIECA, Melvin Redondo, made a brief presentation of the most recent commercial figures of Central America, and affirmed that the regional academic contest is an innovative way to reach more sectors of the Central American society and provoke an academic debate in "aspects of public policy related to the economic development of Central America, from the electricity market to the integration of financial markets, the joint development of regional infrastructure, and other elements linked to the general theme of regionalism and coordinated economic policies in a globalized context."

Within the framework of the activities carried out jointly with SIECA recently, CABEI has supported the process of Deep Integration between the Republics of Guatemala and Honduras; thus contributing economic integration and the ease of regional trade. This is consistent with the 2015-2019 Institutional Strategy, related to its axis of competitiveness and axis of regional integration.

The Director of CABEI in Guatemala, José Carlos Castañeda, celebrated the initiative of both institutions to create a space where academics can present their specialized research on economic integration, adding that "it is strategic to know about new ideas and modern experiences to allow strengthening the Central American countries, and contribute to competitiveness through science, technology and innovation."
