CABEI and OIRSA ratify their commitment to animal and plant health in the region

The objective is to strengthen cooperation between the two institutions in order to foster the development of the productive sectors and competitiveness in the Central American region.

Tegucigalpa September 17, 2014. - The acting Executive President of the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) Attorney Alejandro Rodríguez Zamora received a courtesy visit from the Executive Director of the International Regional Organization of Animal and Plant Health (OIRSA, Spanish acronym), Mr. Efraín Medina Guerra.

They discussed the principal strategic lines along which OIRSA will be supporting the region’s member countries with regard to animal health and food safety. In addition, they identified new work areas of mutual interest to both institutions, such as the implementation of a Regional Phytozoosanitary Program in order to take advantage of and reinforce intra-regional trade and to promote food exports.

Likewise, they talked about the implementation of mitigation measures in the face of emergencies caused by plant pests and diseases in commercially and socially valuable crops and their relationship with climate change. One example of such diseases is coffee rust, which is devastating the region.

The acting Executive President of the Central American Bank for Economic Integration Attorney Alejandro Rodríguez Zamora explained that the purpose of the visit was to promote the interchange of good practices and to adopt initiatives aimed at building and strengthening capabilities in the Central American region to raise competitiveness levels and the participation of Central American products in new markets.
