CABEI inaugurates the Monte Grande Dam, the largest hydroelectric work in the Caribbean

The work was financed by the multilateral with an amount of US$249.6 million.

Santo Domingo, January 25, 2024. - The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI), in collaboration with the President of the Dominican Republic, Mr. Luis Abinader, and the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INDRHI), today inaugurated the Monte Grande Dam, a project that will benefit 51 communities in the southern region of the country.

The work, executed under the responsibility of INDRHI, has the capacity to store 350 million cubic meters of water extracted from the Yaque del Sur River. This infrastructure will perform various functions, such as flood mitigation in the lower basin of the river during floods, supply the Southwest Regional Aqueduct (Asuro), meet the irrigation and hydroelectric power generation demands.

"This project represents a historic milestone that marks the path towards a more prosperous and sustainable future for our country but especially for the southern region, positively impacting the lives of thousands of Dominican families," said CABEI Executive Director to the Dominican Republic, Hostos Rizik.

With actions such as these, CABEI reiterates its commitment to collaborate in strengthening the economic and social factors of its member countries in order to guarantee the prosperous and sustainable development of the region.
