CABEI approves US$1 million grant to support the Republic of Haiti in its recovery from the recent earthquake

30/08/2021

The grants will be made through the government of the Dominican Republic.

Tegucigalpa, August 30, 2021. – In solidarity and support for the Republic of Haiti following the devastating earthquake that shook the southwest of the country on August 14, the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) approved non-reimbursable financial cooperation in the form of US$1 million in emergency aid for its non-founding partner, the Dominican Republic, to support its recovery.

"In these difficult times that the Haitian people are going through, CABEI joins the solidarity aid with this donation that we know the Dominican government will make effective in the best way possible to help them in their recovery from the social and economic crisis generated by the pandemic and recently aggravated by this earthquake that left thousands of people injured and hundreds homeless, in addition to a great deal of structural damage," explained CABEI Executive President, Dr. Dante Mossi.

The donation will be executed by the authorities of the Dominican Republic, who will coordinate actions for the purchase of food, drinking water and primary goods, medicines and utensils for the shelters, as well as inputs for the recovery of affected agricultural crops and fumigation equipment to eliminate pests, among others that may be required. The CABEI Representative Office in the Dominican Republic will be responsible for following up on the cooperation.

With this type of non-reimbursable financial cooperation under the emergency aid modality, CABEI supports countries that have suffered the effects of natural disasters or other emergency situations, such as earthquakes, hurricanes, pandemics, among others. So far in 2021, CABEI has approved US$6.0 million to support countries with this type of assistance, mainly for issues related to COVID-19 and tropical storms.
