The project amounts to approximately 145 million lempiras, 36 million lempiras for each one of the four beneficiary educational centers.

The opening of the “José Cecilio del Valle” Basic Education Center in the community of Portillo in the Municipality of Manto, Olancho was a joyous occasion for the village’s inhabitants.

The inauguration act was presided over today by Honduran President Porfirio Lobo Sosa during the council of ministers.

This is one of the four Basic Education Centers to be constructed and equipped by the project, “Construction, Equipment and Training of Obligatory Preschool to Ninth Grade Basic Education Centers in Extremely Poor Communities.” The project is financed by Spain and the Honduran Government in the framework of Spain’s Debt Conversion Program to Honduras, which is administered by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI).

The project is being executed by the EDUINTER-CONTRATA CENTRO consortium and consists of the construction, equipment and training of four Basic Education Centers located in i) San Marcos, Ocotepeque; ii) Tomalá, Lempira; iii) Chinda, Santa Bárbara and iv) Manto, Olancho, in Honduras.

The four Basic Education Centers will have all basic services including potable water, electricity and connection to sewer systems, and septic tanks will be constructed where these do not exist. The Centers will also be equipped with classrooms, administrative offices, a library, a faculty lounge, computer and natural science laboratories and workshops tailored to the community’s needs, such as carpentry, electromechanics, sewing and cooking, garden areas for agricultural formation, a multi-purpose sports field, recreational areas and a potable water storage tank.

The centers will be provided with furniture, tools, teaching materials, computers and textbooks. Depending on the demands of the labor market in the different areas where the centers are located, the necessary equipment will also be provided to train the students in the appropriate fields. The project also involves the design of community formation and development programs.

In addition, a communication system including internet access, which is guaranteed for five years, was installed, and the teachers working in the Basic Education Centers were trained in its use for administrative and teaching purposes.

With the successful execution of the project, each one of the Basic Education Centers is expected to directly benefit approximately 35,000 children over 10 years, as well as the teachers and administrative personnel who work in them.

The project amounts to approximately L.145,214,026.28 (US$7,685,274.29), L.36,303,506.57 (US$1,921,318.57) for each one of the four beneficiary educational centers.
