Spain became an extra-regional CABEI member in 2005. At the close of 2020, it has a subscribed capital of USD280.00 million with capital payments of USD60.00 million and a shareholding of 4.23%.

The partnership between CABEI and Spain provides financial support to the Central American region through the signing of various financial  cooperation contracts for an amount of USD546.7 million. Of these funds, USD408.4 million have been channeled through agreements signed with the Instituto de Crédito Oficial (ICO, Official Credit Institute)  and the remaining USD138.3 million is provided by the Spain-Honduras Debt Conversion Agreement, held with the Ministry of Economy and Business. During 2020, a financing agreement was signed with ICO for an amount of up to EUR 100.0 million (USD112.5 million) to finance investment and/or liquidity and export/import operations of Spanish companies in CABEI member countries. The loan was signed on June 25, 2020 through a document sharing procedure. Likewise during 2020, a total of USD134.9 million was raised from ICO through the valid agreements between both institutions.

The Central American Bank for Economic Integration and the Ibero-American General Secretariat join forces to promote more education and culture in the region.

Madrid, March 30th, 2023.- In compliance with the Regional Integration and Human Development axis of its Institutional Strategy, the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) and the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB), signed a memorandum of understanding to promote the exchange of knowledge, experiences, and best practices in the development of initiatives aimed at the education and culture sectors in the Bank's member countries.

Through this cooperation agreement, both institutions will join forces to undertake strategic initiatives that converge on common objectives for the promotion of economic and social development in the Central American region and CABEI member countries.

"As the region's development Bank, we are certain that this alliance will also contribute to promoting actions to strengthen sectors of great importance, giving space to innovation, competitiveness and the promotion of MSMEs, as well as participating in forums and initiatives aimed at transferring knowledge in the development of initiatives, especially in the areas of education and culture," said CABEI's Executive President, Dr. Dante Mossi.

"SEGIB highly values the understanding agreement we have signed today with the Central American Bank for Economic Integration, which will allow us to carry out activities mainly in the field of culture and education, student mobility and studies on various subjects," said the Ibero-American Secretary General, Andrés Allamand.

Through these actions and other mechanisms, CABEI promotes more inclusive, quality education and generates better opportunities through the implementation of various initiatives in accordance with and in support of its countries in compliance with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: guarantee inclusive, equitable and quality education, as well as promote learning opportunities for all.

SEGIB is the international organization that supports the 22 countries that make up the Ibero-American community: the 19 Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries of Latin America, and the Iberian Peninsula countries of Spain, Portugal and Andorra. They support the organization of the Ibero-American Summits of Heads of State and Government, fulfill their mandates, and promote Ibero-American cooperation in the fields of education, social cohesion and culture.
