Spain became an extra-regional CABEI member in 2005. At the close of 2020, it has a subscribed capital of USD280.00 million with capital payments of USD60.00 million and a shareholding of 4.23%.
The partnership between CABEI and Spain provides financial support to the Central American region through the signing of various financial cooperation contracts for an amount of USD546.7 million. Of these funds, USD408.4 million have been channeled through agreements signed with the Instituto de Crédito Oficial (ICO, Official Credit Institute) and the remaining USD138.3 million is provided by the Spain-Honduras Debt Conversion Agreement, held with the Ministry of Economy and Business. During 2020, a financing agreement was signed with ICO for an amount of up to EUR 100.0 million (USD112.5 million) to finance investment and/or liquidity and export/import operations of Spanish companies in CABEI member countries. The loan was signed on June 25, 2020 through a document sharing procedure. Likewise during 2020, a total of USD134.9 million was raised from ICO through the valid agreements between both institutions.
More than 3.5 million Hondurans will benefit from the execution of CABEI-approved programs and projects by 2021
The initiatives promoted by the Multilateral are intended to contribute to the health emergency in COVID-19 and the effects of storms Eta and Iota.
Tegucigalpa, July 2, 2021.- In the first six months of the year, the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) approved US$255 million in financing for the Government of the Republic of Honduras, contributing to improving the quality of life of 3.5 million citizens.
CABEI's Executive President, Dr. Dante Mossi, commented during a conversation with the Honduran press: "These are three new operations: the resilient housing reconstruction program, support for the implementation of the national plan to introduce a vaccine against COVID-19, and the voucher program to provide relief to vulnerable families affected by natural phenomena caused by climate change.
"Honduras is making progress with CABEI's support; in the near future, we hope to benefit 2.2 million people through the COVID-19 vaccine; 147,500 inhabitants affected by the Eta and Iota storms through the construction of 2,900 houses and the rehabilitation of 26,500; as well as more than 1 million people affected by natural phenomena resulting from climate change through economic support," explained Mossi.
Likewise, during the first half of 2021, CABEI has disbursed a total of US$97.32 million to the Republic of Honduras, of which 45% went to the public sector and 55% to the private sector.
The active portfolio is currently US$1,814.3 million, comprising 50 public sector projects and 13 private sector projects in areas such as productive infrastructure, energy, financial intermediation, housing, water and sanitation, hospital equipment, education, transportation, irrigation, among others.
CABEI in Honduras has an extensive financial intermediation network with 9 allied private institutions through which it channels resources totaling US$423.7 million to benefit sectors such as micro and small and medium-sized enterprises, foreign trade, productive sectors, gender, energy efficiency, social housing, among others.
CABEI, as the economic arm of the region, will continue working to improve the quality of life of Central Americans by supporting programs and projects that promote human development and social infrastructure.
