CABEI approves US$154.6 million for water sustainability and sanitation in Costa Rica

The resources will be used to improve and expand potable water collection, treatment and distribution systems in 14 cities and to expand a sewage and water treatment system.

Tegucigalpa, August 27, 2015. - The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) granted a US$154.6 million loan to Costa Rica in order to contribute to the Institute of Aqueducts and Sewers (AyA) Water Supply Program for the Metropolitan Area of San Jose, Urban Aqueducts II and Sanitary Sewage System at Juanito Mora de Puntarenas.

The Program’s overall objective is to contribute to the social welfare and quality of life of Costa Ricans by providing access to potable water supply and sanitation services in 14 urban areas in the provinces of San José, Alajuela, Cartago, Puntarenas and Guanacaste. In addition, the Project will foster natural resource and environmental conservation in Costa Rica.
 
The loan complements three previous loans approved to the AyA to reach a total of US$388.00 million.

The operation is in line with CABEI’s 2015-2019 Institutional Strategy and follows the selective principle of developmental impact set out in the Bank’s strategic axis of Social Development, especially the focus area of Human Development and Social Infrastructure, which directly influences economic growth and poverty reduction.
