The implementation of the work will benefit about 66,000 inhabitants of the municipalities of Gracias and Belén, and other surrounding communities, which means a better quality of life for the population and care for the environment.

Gracias, Lempira, September 20, 2018.-  With an investment of 68.7 million lempiras, the Honduran Debt Conversion Program with Spain, managed by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI), inaugurated the project entitled "Construction and Equipment of the El Pinalito Sanitary Landfill".

The project includes the construction of a sanitary landfill, including a leachate treatment plant. With this project, both governments plan to expand and improve the quality of the solid waste collection, transport and treatment services in the municipalities of Gracias and Belén, with the vision of creating an adequate installed capacity to provide a technically and environmentally correct service.

With the start-up of the new sanitary landfill, 66,000 inhabitants of the municipalities of Gracias and Belén, in the department of Lempira, and indirectly more than 31,000 inhabitants of the other municipalities of the COLOSUCA community will benefit directly.

At the inauguration, Alejandro Rodriguez, Executive Vice President of CABEI, emphasized that this project will improve the quality of life of the inhabitants of these communities, allowing for the prevention of health problems and environmental pollution.

He also thanked the valuable contribution of the Honduran Debt Conversion Program with Spain, and highlighted the importance of working to conserve the environment so that future generations have a safe place to live.

CABEI has been a pioneer in supporting the development of projects that contribute to the environmental sustainability of the Central American region. Its resources are continuously invested in projects with an impact on development in order to reduce poverty and inequalities, strengthen regional integration and the competitive insertion of partners in the global economy.

The Honduran Debt Conversion Program with Spain has carried out its initiatives in 13 Honduran Departments in the areas of education, environment and renewable energy. The sanitary landfill projects financed are: expansion of the Tegucigalpa landfill, a new sanitary landfill in Tela, and now the Pinalito sanitary landfill.

The actions executed through this program are aligned with the development policies of the Government of Honduras and the Kingdom of Spain, and the 2015-2019 CABEI Strategy, specifically with the Strategic Axis of Social Development.
