San José, February 4, 2025 - More than 2 million Costa Ricans have a more robust and modern health system that has been strengthened in recent years through a Hospital Infrastructure and Equipment Renovation Program financed by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) for US$270 million.
This program, developed in close collaboration with the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS), the institution in charge of social security in the country, recently concluded its execution with the inauguration of the last of three important works, the Monsignor Víctor Manuel Sanabria Martínez Hospital in Puntarenas, the largest and most modern in Central America, offering quality medical care to more than 350,000 people in the Central Pacific area.
As part of the financing, the East Tower of the Rafael Ángel Calderón Guardia Hospital in San José was also built and equipped. It came into operation at one of the most critical moments for global health, the COVID-19 pandemic, offering care and hospitalization to the most seriously affected patients. It currently benefits more than 1.5 million people, integrating state-of-the-art technology and highly complex services.
Meanwhile, the Hospitalization Tower of La Anexión Hospital in Nicoya was the first project to be completed as part of this financing program, significantly expanding hospital capacity in the North Pacific area, improving services and medical specialties for 130,000 people.
“The culmination of this program marks a milestone in the strengthening of the Costa Rican health system and reaffirms CABEI's commitment to improving people's quality of life,” pointed out Gisela Sánchez, CABEI's Executive President.
With this milestone, CABEI ratifies its mission of promoting transformative projects that foster the social and economic development of its member countries, prioritizing initiatives that directly benefit the population and promote equitable access to essential services.
