Construction of Nuevo Amanecer Regional Hospital progresses in the North Caribbean region of Nicaragua

The hospital infrastructure will benefit more than half a million Nicaraguans, mostly indigenous, Afro-descendants and mestizos, with new medical specialties and state-of-the-art equipment.

Managua, June 17, 2022.- The replacement of the Nuevo Amanecer Regional Hospital in the city of Bilwi, in the North Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region of Nicaragua is progressing steadily with 36% progress in the new construction works that will benefit a total of 515,469 inhabitants of the municipality of Puerto Cabezas and surrounding areas and which are partially financed by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI), as was recently confirmed by the multilateral during a supervision visit.

"We are very pleased to learn of this project’s progress, which will bring quality health services to indigenous, Afro-descendant and mestizo communities for the first time in the history of this area of Nicaragua. In addition, once the works are completed, it will provide annual attention to 80,000 emergency consultations and 103,000 outpatient consultations, as well as 3,200 deliveries and 5,295 major surgeries in a safe and comfortable environment," said CABEI Executive President, Dr. Dante Mossi.

The works, which the Bank is financing for US$52.97 million, consist of a two-story building and other auxiliary buildings on a total area of 18,415 m² on a 42,944.2 m² site, which will have state-of-the-art equipment, 150 census beds and 57 non-census beds, as well as seven new medical specialties, specialized outpatient services, emergency, day hospital, obstetrics and gynecology, neonatology, surgery, intensive care, orthopedics, internal medicine, chemotherapy, among others.

"We continue to support hospital infrastructure projects in the country that ultimately improve the quality of life of families and restore the right to health. We can add other human development initiatives to this work such as the recently completed Chinandega Hospital and the investment made in the Dr. Fernando Vélez Paíz Western General Hospital in Managua and the Dr. Alejandro Dávila Bolaños Military Hospital, which are now serving the population," said CABEI Director for Nicaragua, Uriel Pérez, who was part of the supervision mission.

CABEI is currently supporting five projects in the health sector, including the implementation of the COVID-19 Vaccination Deployment and attention Plan, as well as the construction and equipping of hospitals to deal with the pandemic, with financing totaling US$331.6 million.
