The works that are transforming the lives of families in this area of the country are part of the CABEI-administered Debt Conversion Program for Honduras vis-à-vis Spain.

Tegucigalpa, November 27, 2024. – The completion of the potable water and sanitation program in the city of La Paz, Honduras, was celebrated at an emotional unveiling of plaques. This valuable initiative ensures that more than 29,000 inhabitants now have access to potable water and sanitation, which will not only reduce disease, but also considerably improve the quality of life in the community.

The project's investment amounts to US$11.2 million, of which US$9.6 million comes from the Honduras-Spain Fund and US$1.6 million from the Municipality of La Paz. These works are part of the Honduran Debt Conversion Program vis-à-vis Spain (PCD 2007), administered by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) .

The works included the construction of a pipeline of almost 20 kilometers, the creation of a potable water treatment plant and a photovoltaic power plant, as well as the installation of a storage tank and 4,800 micro-meters in household connections. The sanitary sewerage system was also expanded with almost 42 kilometers of network, more than 500 inspection wells, a wastewater treatment plant and 2,300 new home connections.

La Paz, municipality and head of the department of the same name, is located in the central-eastern part of the country and is known for its topography, which earned it the name of “Valle de Piedras” (Valley of Stones) in the times of the Lenca civilizations. This place stands out for its archaeological remains, its rich biodiversity and an agrarian economy centered on crops such as coffee and sugar cane, as well as cattle raising. However, despite its many attributes, the city has faced problems of scarcity and quality in its potable water and sanitation systems, so the arrival of these basic services represents a significant improvement in the quality of life of families.

In addition to supporting this initiative, the CABEI-administered Debt Conversion Program for Honduras vis-à-vis Spain will invest in other works in the country to contribute to Honduras' economic growth and social development through the financing of projects oriented towards the strategic axes of environment, education and transportation infrastructure.

The event was attended by representatives of the Governments of Honduras and Spain, CABEI authorities, members of the La Paz Mayor's Office, direct beneficiaries and representatives of the construction and supervising companies.
