CABEI volunteers in Guatemala contribute to reforestation efforts in the Naciones Unidas National Park

Through this activity, 500 trees of native species were planted, which will support the restoration of areas that were affected by forest fires this year.

Guatemala City, July 23, 2024.– As a sign of its continued commitment to the environment and the community, 50 volunteers from the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) carried out a successful reforestation activity in the Naciones Unidas National Park, a protected area that is home to abundant biodiversity and represents an important source of water for the metropolitan region between Amatitlán and part of Villa Nueva.

So far in 2024, the park was affected by a series of forest fires that affected nearly 8 hectares of forest. For this reason, the Defensores de la Naturaleza Foundation, the institution that administers this protected area, has partnered with institutions such as CABEI to implement ecological restoration and reforestation programs.

Around 500 trees of native species such as white sapote, cream bean, cushin, and yellow trumpets, covering an estimated area of two hectares, were planted during the activity. This joint effort not only reflects CABEI's commitment to environmental conservation and protection, but also fosters a sense of community and teamwork among its employees and their families, specialized personnel, and park rangers.

For the Foundation, the restoration of the forest landscape of the Naciones Unidas National Park has been essential not only to maintain the habitat of local species, reduce the pressure on ecosystem services, and improve carbon emissions, but also to protect the forest, which is located in a strategic area of the Lake Amatitlán basin.

These activities are part of the Environmental Management System that CABEI implements every year, with which it seeks to contribute to forest restoration in biologically important areas, as well as to compensate for the paper consumption generated as part of the operational and administrative activities in its buildings.
