CABEI supports Honduran Government’s Dry Corridor Alliance

During 2015, CABEI operations in Honduras will finance projects aimed at reducing poverty and improving social infrastructure, as well as promoting renewable energy use and climate change mitigation.

Tegucigalpa, February 20, 2015. - The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI), is committed to Central America’s development and integration and will support its member countries’ initiatives, especially those that contribute to improving social infrastructure, environmental protection and the quality of life of Central Americans.

CABEI Executive President Dr. Nick Rischbieth reiterated this vision during his participation at the first anniversary celebration of the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding, which established the Dry Corridor Alliance.

President Rischbieth declared that CABEI will provide of its historical expertise in infrastructure development for the construction, rehabilitation and modernization of 280 km of secondary and tertiary network roads in rural communities in the dry corridor, thereby facilitating access of producers to local and municipal agricultural markets.

President Rischbieth said that this CABEI initiative is expected to benefit 50,000 families in their struggle to overcome extreme poverty and reduce malnutrition levels of children under five years old by 20 percent.

During his speech, President Rischbieth reiterated that the new CABEI 2015-2019 Institutional Strategy: "Integrating Sustainable Development and Competitiveness," will continue to finance major infrastructure projects on a national level, accompanied by interventions focused on promoting agricultural production and competitiveness, working closely with the Honduran government and the international cooperation community in the framework of the Dry Corridor Alliance.

In 2015, the Bank expects to approve US$285.5 million to Honduras. 70.2% will be targeted at public sector initiatives, and 20.95% will be allocated to the private sector.
In recent years, CABEI has increased its interventions in the health, water and sanitation sectors as well as promoting public housing and job creation through small and medium enterprises.
