03/03/2025

Guatemala City, March 3, 2025.- In order to support the Government of Guatemala in identifying investment opportunities in tourism infrastructure, the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) approved non-reimbursable technical cooperation for US$50 thousand, promoted by the Guatemalan Tourism Institute (INGUAT), to develop a "Diagnostic of Transportation Alternatives for Mobilizing Tourists between La Aurora International Airport and Antigua, Guatemala".

The colonial city has established itself as one of the most visited tourist destinations, and to enhance its development it needs to advance in urban mobility solutions that allow efficient and sustainable transportation. In this regard, this cooperation will help develop an initial diagnostic to analyze the project's enabling conditions, identifying the best technological options for the mode of transportation, strategic connection points, as well as institutional and legal aspects to determine the financial, environmental, legal, and operational feasibility of the project.

In the event that the preliminary feasibility of the project is positive, support will be provided for the preparation of the Terms of Reference for the contracting of the Prefeasibility and Demand Studies.

The consultancy process will include technical visits and working meetings coordinated by CABEI and INGUAT with the main stakeholders in the transportation sector, including the Ministry of Communications, Infrastructure and Housing (CIV), the Municipalities of Guatemala, Mixco, and Antigua Guatemala, among others.

The resources of this cooperation will be administered and executed by CABEI through a consultancy contracted for this purpose.

This initiative reflects CABEI's commitment to meeting the needs of the local economy and the tourism sector, as well as its contribution to the Sustainable Development Goal: Sustainable Cities and Communities, by seeking access to affordable transportation systems.
