CABEI and UTH launch educational credit program

Young Hondurans will have yet another university with financing available for higher education.

Tegucigalpa, 17 de mayo de 2017. -Today, the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) signed a cooperation agreement with Universidad Tecnológica de Honduras (UTH). The agreement will enable the higher education center to form part of the CABEI Educational Credit Program (PBCE).

The agreement aims to strengthen the competitiveness of Honduran students seeking to continue their higher education studies at Universidad Tecnológica de Honduras. 

The agreement was signed by CABEI Country Manager for Honduras, Mr. Pedro Emilio Banegas, and UTH President, Dr. Javier Mejía. The Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to Honduras, Mr. Alejandro R.K. Huang, and Costa Rican Ambassador to Honduras, Mr. Eugenio Trejos, served as honor witnesses.

The PBCE, which is a mechanism created to promote increased education rates in the Central American countries, is financed with CABEI’s own funds and with contributions from the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) granted through the Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF). To date, the program has disbursed a total of US$5.7 million benefiting 469 young people (225 women and 244 men). Currently, 24 universities located in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica are affiliated to the program.

CABEI Country Manager for Honduras, Mr. Pedro Emilio Banegas, explained that this strategic alliance is part of the Bank's efforts to create high-impact initiatives in the region with the fundamental goal of promoting Central American development.

He also ratified CABEI's commitment to Intermediary Financial Institutions (IFIs) by offering competitive and top-level services that promote the social and economic development of the countries of the region.

For his part, UTH President, Dr. Javier Mejía, stated that, “It will be of great benefit for the 20,000 members of the University’s academic community in all modalities and majors to have access to financing offered by CABEI.”
