CABEI and UNDP Strengthen Strategic Partnership to Accelerate Sustainable Development in Central America

New agreement to facilitate funding and technical assistance for key projects focused on poverty, climate change, and governance.
New York, April 22, 2025. The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) signed today a Procedures Agreement and Memorandum of Financial Instruments, reinforcing their strategic partnership and laying the groundwork for joint efforts on priority initiatives aimed at sustainable development, regional integration, and resilience across Central America.
“This collaboration with UNDP enhances our ability to promote sustainable development in the countries we serve. Together, we will drive meaningful transformation with tangible results for the region,” stated CABEI’s Executive President, Gisela Sánchez.
The agreement establishes more efficient mechanisms for channeling financial and technical resources, facilitating implementing programs backed by CABEI and supported by UNDP. Key focus areas include poverty reduction, climate action, energy transition, governance, and the protection of ecosystems such as coral reefs—all under high transparency, efficiency, and accountability standards.
“UNDP and CABEI share a vision of inclusive, resilient, and equitable development. The signing of this agreement strengthens our joint commitment to support the region’s transformation through solutions that enhance governance, tackle inequality, and protect Central America’s natural resources. Our collaboration not only aims to advance the sustainable development agenda, but also to ensure that the solutions we pursue are deeply aligned with local needs—promoting inclusion and well-being for all,” said Michelle Muschett, UNDP Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean.
The partnership also aims to strengthen CABEI’s institutional capacities through tools that measure the impact of its operations in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to support locally adapted solutions that drive more effective public policy across the region.
This initiative reaffirms the shared commitment of CABEI and UNDP to an inclusive and sustainable development model that responds to the most pressing challenges facing Central America.
