• The CABEI and REDCA alliance will strengthen the development of telecommunications and information and communication technologies in the Central American region.

Tegucigalpa, June 26, 2017. -   El Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) and the Red Centroamericana de Telecomunicaciones Sociedad Anónima (REDCA) signed a memorandum of understanding to develop joint actions aimed at promoting communication technologies in the region.

It is expected that the agreement will enable Central Americans to gradually gain access to improved rates and higher service quality. Likewise, the agreement seeks that governments have access to the financing of regional interest projects involving broadband technology, regional integration and transportation infrastructure for the Mesoamerican Information Highway.

The agreement was signed by CABEI Executive President, Dr. Nick Rischbieth, and REDCA S.A. General Manager, Mr. Claudio Bermúdez Aquart. Dr. Nick Rischbieth expressed that one of the Bank’s priorities is to join efforts with projects that have a high impact on regional integration.

He added that, "Through these actions, CABEI seeks to promote social benefits, job creation, institutional strengthening and the modernization of cities, which are just a few of CABEI's commitments to support the peoples of the region."

The alliance will lead to the implementation of joint initiatives to explore the possibilities of obtaining non-reimbursable financing, credit lines and other programs that will promote the development of telecommunications and information and communication technologies in the region through the proper operation of the REDCA telecommunications fiber optic network.

CABEI is part of the Inter-Institutional Technical Group of the Mesoamerica Project (PM). During the 2008 to 2016 period, it approved an accumulated amount of US$2.20 billion for PM to execute projects that contribute to improving the quality of life in the Mesoamerican countries.

Pursuant to the mandate approved at the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Mechanism of Dialogue and Concertation of Tuxtla, REDCA has been constituted as the axis for the materialization of the Mesoamerican Information Highway, through the use of fiber optics installed in the electrical transmission network of the Central American Electric Interconnection System (SIEPAC), prioritizing the startup and operation of the optical network in order to increase and improve the availability of broadband in the region, the northern interconnection with Mexico and the southern interconnection with Colombia, among others.
