CABEI and the Office of the First Lady join forces to promote the wellbeing of elderly adults in Panama

18/02/2025

Panama City, February 18 2025– In a firm step towards inclusive and sustainable development, the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) approved a non-reimbursable initiative for up to US$725,000 for the development of the “Home for Elderly Adults Project” in Panama, which will be implemented by the Ministry of the Presidency through the Office of the First Lady of the Republic.

This project will transform the former Apostolic Nunciature, a 1,524 m² historical space, into a modern integrated care center for more than 500 elderly adults. The “Home for Elderly Adults” will offer a safe and accessible environment adapted to the needs of elderly persons, promoting their autonomy, physical and emotional wellbeing, as well as their community integration.

The center will provide care and contribute significantly to the prevention of diseases related to inactivity and social isolation, two common challenges among elderly adults. By promoting physical activity, social connection and participation in educational programs and technology training workshops, it is hoped to reduce public health costs and strengthen the “silver economy,” which recognizes the value and potential of elderly persons. This project will also generate employment and serve as a model for future initiatives in the region.

With this action, Panama is taking an important step towards a more just and supportive future for its elderly adults. CABEI is proud to contribute to a project that provides dignity, autonomy, and wellbeing to vulnerable populations.
