CABEI: New investment in Huehuetenango marks a step towards security for 43,000 Guatemalans

The new police station seeks to improve working conditions for 70 agents to ensure safer environments in the municipality of San Mateo Ixtatán.
Guatemala City, January 21, 2025.- In a firm step towards strengthening public safety, the Ministry of the Interior (MINGOB), with the support of the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI), inaugurated a new police station in the municipality of San Mateo Ixtatán, Huehuetenango, directly benefiting more than 43 thousand inhabitants. This modern facility has 682 square meters of construction, designed to comfortably house 70 agents, and has been equipped with furniture and technology that optimize the performance of the security forces.
The new police station has modern and adequate spaces, including separate areas for male and female officers, ensuring safer and more comfortable working conditions for all personnel. This infrastructure will enable a faster and more effective response to emergency situations, improving the operability of the National Civil Police (PNC) and strengthening crime prevention. With this investment, an environment of trust and tranquility is promoted for the inhabitants of the municipality.
"Investing in police infrastructure not only strengthens the operational capacity of the security forces, but also creates safer environments that promote the well-being of citizens and foster local competitiveness. A safe community is the starting point for attracting investment, generating employment, and promoting sustainable development," said Miguel Almeyda, CABEI Country Manager in Guatemala.
This project is part of CABEI's efforts to strengthen security infrastructure in the region, promoting safer environments conducive to economic growth. To date, with funds from the CABEI-financed Justice Sector Investment and Modernization Program, six more stations have opened their doors to serve more than 194,000 people in:
- San Luis Jilotepeque, Jalapa
- Aldea El Fiscal in Palencia, Guatemala
- Monjas, Jalapa
- Bárcena, Villa Nueva in Guatemala
- Santa Maria Ixhuatán, Santa Rosa
- San José La Máquina, Suchitepéquez
With the delivery of this new police station, the Bank reaffirms its commitment to support initiatives that promote the security and well-being of communities. A safe environment is fundamental for economic and social development, and today Guatemala takes an important step in that direction.
