CABEI achieves compliance with environmental objectives at its El Salvador office

• Through its Environmental Management System (EMS), the El Salvador office has managed to reduce its consumption of electricity, water and CO₂ emissions.

San Salvador, February 23rd, 2023 - Within theframework of the Environmental Management System implemented under the environmental and social policy, the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) announced compliance with the 2022 environmental objectives of its office in El Salvador. This milestone reiterates the commitment of the institution and each of its collaborators to reduce the environmental impact generated by the operation of its facilities.

To improve its environmental performance, CABEI has an Environmental Management System (EMS) certified under international standard ISO 14001:2015, which covers administrative and operational activities carried out both at the Bank's headquarters in Tegucigalpa and its representative office in El Salvador. Internal practices and environmental objectives are integrated here to control significant aspects such as the consumption of energy and water resources, among others. Strategic objectives are established to add value to the environmental performance of the offices, and operational objectives are established to reduce the environmental impacts generated in the day-to-day operations.

In 2022, at a strategic level, we sought to offset the carbon footprint generated by the operation in 2021 by offsetting 107 tons of CO₂ through the acquisition of carbon credits and implementing improvements in monitoring the consumption of electricity and clean water. Additionally, to reduce CO₂ emissions, two hybrid vehicles were acquired. As a result, CABEI achieved a 27% reduction in fuel consumption in the country, equivalent to 544 gallons.

"We celebrate this achievement together with the teams at our representative office in El Salvador, who, as well as at our headquarters in Honduras, made it possible. As an institution, we are committed to reducing or eliminating any negative impact on the environment from our operations and, on the contrary, generating positive impacts. We are happy to know that the good results are generated from our culture and internal management and that these are measures that everyone can implement, even in their homes, to have a better world," said CABEI's Executive President, Dante Mossi.

At the operating level, three goals were also established: the first was to maintain non-renewable energy consumption at 285,289 kWh and at the end of the year 266,921 kWh were consumed, achieving a decrease of 6%; the second was to maintain clean water consumption at 1,863 m³ and at the end of the year a reduction of 27% was achieved with 1,361 m³ consumed.

Finally, it was planned to generate 43,200 kWh of solar energy to avoid CO₂ emissions and the goal was exceeded by 15% by generating 49,200 kWh, thereby avoiding the emission of 32 tons of CO₂.

In this way, CABEI continues to work to meet the needs of preserving the environment and combating climate change. To this end, the expansion of its Environmental Management System (EMS) is fundamental, which is why, in addition to continuing to exceed annual objectives at its headquarters in Honduras and its office in El Salvador, it is working to expand it to its representative offices in Guatemala, Nicaragua and Costa Rica.
