CABEI confirms progress on projects that positively impact the lives of more than 4.2 million Panamanians
Panama City, June 27, 2024.- This week, Panama received a visit from a delegation of the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI), with the main objective of monitoring the active operations that are being executed with the support of the multilateral for the benefit of the Panamanian people.
During their stay, the team inspected the Sanitation Program of the Districts of Arraiján and La Chorrera. This important project, an extension of the emblematic Panama City and Bay Sanitation Program, will provide sanitation to approximately 240,000 inhabitants in more than 66,000 homes in the aforementioned districts through a system that will collect, deliver, and treat wastewater, significantly reducing the contamination of rivers, streams, and the Panama Bay.
In addition, the delegation visited the Las Playas Corridor Project, noting its satisfactory progress with a rate of 80%. Once completed, this Tranche will benefit more than 2.5 million Panamanians who use this road as the only way to reach the interior of the country and the capital city. In addition to generating savings in time and fuel, the project will boost economic dynamism and strengthen the logistics sector.
Another of the works supervised was the Construction and Partial Equipment Project of the new Gorgas Memorial Institute for Health Studies (ICGES), which is already under construction and will benefit more than 4.2 million inhabitants. With more than 18,000 square meters, the project will have modern research and teaching facilities, strengthening public health research capabilities, and improving medical care in Panama and the region.
With an investment of more than US$300 million, the initiatives inspected are destined to significantly improve the lives of millions of Panamanians. The supervision mission concluded successfully, leaving optimism, and reiterating the multilateral's firm commitment to key areas such as infrastructure, sanitation, and public health, as well as to sustainable development in Panama.
