Tegucigalpa, September 25, 2024.- Access to water is a universal right, essential for human development and public health, which is why the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI), at its Board of Directors meeting in September 2024, approved a new financing of US$130 million for the Republic of Nicaragua for the Program for Expansion and Improvement of 4 potable water systems in 5 Nicaraguan cities.

The general objective of this program is to improve the standard of living and quality of life of the population in the municipalities of Ocotal, Camoapa, Diriamba, San Jorge, and Buenos Aires by expanding and improving their potable water systems, thereby ensuring greater continuity, efficiency, and quality of service.

Within the Program's specific objectives and its impact on development, the annual production of more than 27 million cubic meters of potable water is expected, through the construction of 26 new water supply sources, as well as the installation and rehabilitation of more than 11,700 household connections. The expansion of potable water service is expected to benefit more than 140,000 Nicaraguans by 2026, reducing waterborne diseases. It is also important to note the positive impact on the generation of more than 900 new jobs, also promoting economic development in the benefited areas.
