CABEI approves initiative for up to US$725,000 to rehabilitate public health infrastructure in Honduras
These new resources will be used to refurbish 22 health facilities in the departments of Atlántida and Colón, benefiting some 60,000 people.
Tegucigalpa, December 24, 2024. – Within the framework of the Sustainable Economic Development Program (PRODES), the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) approved an initiative, with non-reimbursable resources of up to US$725,000, to support the efforts of the Republic of Honduras in the rehabilitation and recovery of the public health infrastructure affected by the devastating effects of Tropical Storm Sara, which hit the country in November 2024.
The availability of these resources will make it possible to restore 22 health facilities in the most affected departments, especially in Atlántida and Colón, benefiting some 60,000 people. The project aims to ensure the continuity of essential medical services by restoring the operation of health centers that have been partially collapsed or completely disabled.
The initiative will also focus on vulnerable populations, such as women, children, the elderly and the chronically ill, ensuring that they receive medical attention both during the emergency and in the recovery process. To this end, temporary health care brigades will be implemented to complement existing services and support the rehabilitation of affected health centers.
In addition, resilience and sustainability principles will be incorporated into reconstruction to reduce the risk of future damage and ensure a more robust infrastructure in the face of natural disasters. The project will be executed by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Honduras (SESAL) and is part of CABEI's institutional strategy 2025 - 2029.
Tropical Storm Sara left thousands of families in a highly vulnerable situation, destroying essential infrastructure and seriously affecting the operation of the health system. The resulting health crisis, aggravated by flooding and disease outbreaks, underscores the urgency of recovering infrastructure to ensure continued health care in affected communities.
In support of its founding Member Country, CABEI in November approved emergency aid to assist families affected by Tropical Storm Sara in Honduras.
