CABEI supports Dominican Republic with final designs for Monte Grande Multipurpose Dam

Antigua Guatemala, March 29, 2022. – With the purpose of concluding one of the most important works related to water resources in the Dominican Republic with the highest standards, the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) approved a US$3.6 million technical cooperation for the preparation of studies and final designs for the complementary works of the Monte Grande Multipurpose Dam.

Among the complementary works for the dam, which also has CABEI's financial support of US$249.6 million for its construction, are the irrigation canal systems, water conduction works to the drinking water treatment plant in the province of Barahona, flood mitigation works, a hydroelectric plant at the foot of the dam, and a transmission line, among others.

CABEI's Executive President, Dr. Dante Mossi, explained: "these complementary investments are very necessary to fully complete a project of great magnitude and benefit to Dominicans, which will increase the amount of drinking water for irrigation of the different agricultural activities in 51 communities neighboring the area where the project is being developed."

The Montegrande Phase III Multipurpose Dam Project is located in the province of Barahona, on the border with the province of Azua in the southwest of the country. As of January 2022, construction of the dam was 61% complete, with disbursements of US$206.6 million.

The resources will be administered by the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INDRHI for its Spanish acronym), and it is estimated that the final studies and designs for the complementary works will begin in April 2022 and conclude in January 2023.
