Belize has been a non-founding CABEI regional member since 2006. It currently has an active portfolio of US$11.00 million to guarantee citizen security by strengthening national security institutions through investments in infrastructure and equipment.

In the 2020-2021 period, three emergency grants were awarded for US$2.0 million to address the emergency caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the damage caused by Hurricane Eta.

Belize receives CABEI grant of US$500,000 to confront COVID-19


The non-reimbursable financial cooperation will support the country in its efforts to mitigate the spread of the virus.

Tegucigalpa, June 9th, 2021.- To support the Government of Belize's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, this week the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) made a disbursement of US$500,000 in non-reimbursable financial cooperation for emergency assistance.

"The Bank continues to support its member countries and, on this occasion, the Belizean people. We are committed to providing assistance through different financial modalities, from technical assistance to providing resources to strengthen the health sector, its capacities and, above all, to save lives," said CABEI Executive President, Dr. Dante Mossi.

The resources granted may be used for the purchase of medicines and medical supplies to attend to any health emergency that may occur in the country; in addition to the purchase of food, drinking water and other primary goods required by the affected population.

They may also be used to finance communication campaigns and actions related to emergency care and the affected population; disease preparedness and response plans; strengthening surveillance, preparing health services, preventing the spread of the disease and maintaining essential services.

Dr. Mossi also explained that since the beginning of the pandemic, CABEI has made the COVID-19 Emergency Support and Preparedness and Economic Reactivation Program, available to member countries for US$3.06 billion. Currently, thanks to the issuance of the thematic bond, the Bank supports the region's governments with resources under favorable financial conditions.
