CABEI formally presented its program for Central American Food Security to the President of Honduras, acting in his role as President Pro Tempore of the System for Central America Integration (SICA)
CABEI delivered the “Program for Strengthening Food Security in Central America” to Honduran President Manuel Zelaya, an aid package of US$ 300 million for the entire region.
Prior to the current international food shortage, CABEI was the first organization to design a program that would facilitate successful implementation of the Central American Agriculture Council’s (CAC) “Emergency Plan for Increasing Production of Staple Grains in Central America”
Also present for the formal delivery were Hector Hernandez, Agricultural Minister of Honduras and President Pro Tempore of CAC, and Dr. Nick Rischbieth, Acting Executive President of CABEI.
CABEI will establish a credit line for Honduras worth US$10 million so as to provide immediate resources that will prevent a food crisis.
In accordance with the country's needs, the program will likewise establish a trust of up to US$ 40 million in order to increase food production.
Food production will also be fostered through US$ 10 million dollars-worth of public-private setups, which will increase the availability of fixed assets such as irrigation systems, silos, and deposit storages. These types of setups will help increase productivity without adding to the national debt.
With this program CABEI confirms its commitment to Central America and to achieving its strategic axes: combating poverty, integration, and successful insertion into the global economy. |
